Unofficial reports over the weekend and an image of the historic Augusta School gymnasium posted on twitter as a background image have helped put pieces together as Augusta Independent Schools concluded their search for a head coach of boys varsity basketball. Those reports have been confirmed. Roger Newton was named Augusta Independent boys varsity basketball coach today, according to a press release from the school. Newton takes over for Brian Kirk who left the program to take the boys varsity coaching position at Mason County. Newton comes to Augusta with a lot to prove and an appetite for wins. He was most recently the girls varsity head coach at Bath County High School going 15-45 in two seasons. Newton also brings a lot of experience in boys varsity basketball. Most recently in his time at Nicholas County High School where he went 21-37 in two seasons from 2013 to 2015. Newton also spent time as head coach at East Jessamine and Lexington Christian. Roger Newton also brings experience in being an athletic director, a position he held at Greenup County before going to Nicholas and he was AD at East Jessamine, LCA & a similar role at Grace College and Indiana Tech. Newton will take over as AD after the departure of Brian Kirk who previously held the position. Newton takes over an Augusta team looking to recover from back to back losing seasons. Augusta will also look to prove itself once again as the Panthers haven’t appeared in the regional tournament since its Cinderella postseason run in 2015.
