Augusta mayor Wendell High and city council were in full work mode early Wednesday evening. With almost half the council members stating that they’re tired of hearing from the community on the lack of progress on the public pool reconstruction project, council members were eager to get the ball rolling. Councilman Joe Goecke stated that there is certainty that the first loan payment could be made in full confidence. Goecke also urged the mayor and council to review all tax options before putting a Nickel Tax on the ballot for November to help ease the issue of full funding for the project. Magistrate-elect (Augusta West) Craig Miller mentioned that it was long overdue to at least make a motion to start with the beginning phases of the reconstruction project. Miller’s request was met with no opposition as each council member agreed that the project needed to begin. With that, the council unanimously voted to approve the mayor taking the necessary measures to complete the paperwork for the loan and also approved the agreement with the general contractor. Mayor High everso bluntly stated, “We’re going to do the pool.” Each council member as well as Mayor High seemed very confident that the funding would definitely be there and the project should go smoothly. The City of Augusta hopes for a very safe and much improved public pool to be open for the 2019 season.
